TO DECARBONIZE DISTRICT HEATING

A MAJOR CHALLENGE

Today, almost 60% of the heat produced in Europe comes from fossil fuel sources (gas, coal, fuel oil). The Calogena project offers a solution designed to decarbonize district heating in Europe, which are used to heat residential and office buildings.

Against the challenge of energy transition and the will to develop heating distribution, nuclear energy is indispensable for reducing the carbon footprint by ensuring complete decarbonization of heat production.

A Calogena module replacing a gas-fired installation would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30,000 tonnes a year. For a coal-fired installation, this figure would rise to 60,000 tonnes a year – a significant contribution to the energy transition.

THE CALOGENA SOLUTION

SAFETY, SIMPLICITY AND ROBUSTNESS

Calogena is developing a type of SMR (Small Modular Reactor): a small water nuclear boiler based on technologies that have been mastered and proven for several decades.

Operation at low pressure and low temperature, direct use of the heat produced, and a very limited number of auxiliary systems make the concept intrinsically simpler and safer than any reactor currently in operation or planned.

Specifically conceived for district heating, Calogena will provide a safe, stable and carbon-free source of heat for local authorities looking to build the city of tomorrow.

THE MISSING LINK

OF THE FRENCH NUCLEAR INDUSTRY

Calogena benefits from the dual expertise of the GORGÉ industrial group, which specialises in high-tech businesses, and the team of twelve nuclear experts involved in the project. They contribute their technical knowledge and experience in the main French and international reactor development projects.

In this way, the Calogena project combines the best experience and know-how in the French nuclear industry with the dynamism, the financial solidity and the industrial strength of an innovative family-run mid-sized company.

A PROJECT SUPPORTED BY THE STATE

Calogena is taking a new step in its development with this new susbsidy of €5.2 million.

This subsidy confirms the interest of the public authorities in decarbonising district heating through nuclear energy.
